Spiritual Growth: A Decision and a Commitment to Consistency

Spiritual growth doesn’t happen by accident. It starts with a decision and requires consistency. Psalm 1:1-2 provides a clear roadmap for intentional growth, guiding us toward a deeper relationship with God through His Word.

Why Spiritual Growth Requires a Decision

Have you ever noticed that personal growth—whether spiritual, emotional, or intellectual—never just happens? You don’t wake up one morning suddenly more spiritually mature than you were the night before. Growth is the result of intentional decisions and consistent actions.

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:1-2, ESV)

The individual described in these verses has made a clear decision—a decision to reject what is harmful and to embrace what leads to growth.

The Danger of Passive Spirituality

Many believers fall into the trap of passive spirituality, assuming that as long as they attend church and listen to sermons, they will grow automatically. But the reality is that spiritual growth is an active process.

Signs You Might Be Drifting Spiritually

  • Lack of Passion for God's Word – You find yourself reading the Bible less and less.
  • Inconsistent Prayer Life – Prayer becomes occasional rather than a daily habit.
  • Spiritual Apathy – You feel indifferent about growing spiritually.
  • Worldly Influences Take Priority – Entertainment, work, or hobbies crowd out time with God.
  • Church Feels Like a Routine – You attend services, but don’t engage deeply with the message.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s time to make a conscious decision to stop drifting and start growing.

Intentionality: The Key to Lasting Spiritual Growth

Think about your physical growth. From infancy to adulthood, growth happened because of intentionality. Someone made sure you were fed, protected, and cared for. Without that intentionality, physical development would have been hindered.

Spiritual Growth Requires Consistency

“...on his law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:2, ESV)

This verse paints a picture of daily, consistent engagement with God’s Word—not just when it’s convenient, not just when life slows down, but day and night.

Practical Steps to Build Consistency in Bible Study

  • Set a Specific Time – Choose a time each day when you will study God’s Word.
  • Create a Distraction-Free Environment – Find a quiet place where you can focus.
  • Use a Reading Plan – Following a structured plan keeps you from feeling lost.
  • Take Notes and Journal – Writing down insights helps reinforce learning.
  • Make It a Habit, Not a Task – View Bible study as time with God, not just another item on your to-do list.

Final Challenge: Your Growth Plan

Spiritual growth is not a mystery. The roadmap is right in front of us. Decide. Be intentional. Stay consistent.

I challenge you today:

  1. Make the decision – Commit to spiritual growth.
  2. Create a plan – Define what consistency looks like for you.
  3. Follow through daily – Prioritize spiritual growth and stick with it.

When you do this, a lifetime of growth awaits you.
